This Week in Turkey’s guest was Faculty Member at Ankara University’s International Relations department, Professor İlhan Uzgel. Professor Uzgel evaluated the first call to prayer at Hagia Sophia mosque, what symbolic messages the images evoked to the national and international community. Professor Uzgel also assessed the decision in terms of Turkey’s recent aggressive foreign policy and how the decision will play out with Turkey’s voters.
Academic and cyber-rights activist Professor Yaman Akdeniz also spoke to This Week with regards to the social media draft bill submitted by the ruling Justice and Development Party to parliament. Akdeniz spoke about the blow the bill will have if passed to the already-restricted freedom of speech on social media platforms.
