This Week in Turkey (228): with Esra Aygın on President Erdoğan’s visit to TRNC

Our guest this week is freelance journalist Esra Aygın to discuss President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. President Erdoğan made a visit to Northern Cyprus and made certain vows that garnered attention and criticism from both Cypriots and the International community. In other news, there is an influx of Afghan refugees coming into Turkey by the thousands which has led to a re-ignition of anti-refugee sentiments in Turkey, where the main opposition party chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu promises to expel refugees from Turkey when they win the Presidential seat come next election. The removal of Dr. Melih Bulu as the rector of Boğaziçi University signaled victory for some but a need for cautious optimism for others. Can Candan, a vocal protestor and faculty member at Boğaziçi University was terminated by Bulu’s replacement Dr. Naci İnci. As a result protests continued at Boğaziçi into their 7th Month.Suruç massacre protests turned violent in Istanbul. This year marks the 6th anniversary of the Suruç massacre that left tens dead and hundreds wounded. The suicide attack orchastrated by isis had been engulfed in controversy as some blamed the government for inaction.
