This Week in Turkey (233): Selim Kuneralp on Afghanistan and Turkey’s diplomatic relations

Turkish Ministry of National Defense announced that the first batch of troops being evacuated from Afghanistan arrived in Ankara yesterday. The Taliban asked Turkey for “technical assistance” in the operations of the Kabul Airport after the withdrawal all of foreign forces.“ K Defense Minister, Ben Wallace, plans to establish Afghan refugee ‘processing hubs’ in Turkey and Pakistan.

Selahattin Demirtaş, the former Peoples’ Democratic Party Co-Chair remains incarcerated despite the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights High Chamber and the Constitutional Court. Since November 4, 2016, Demirtaş has been held in Edirne Prison. Medyascope’s reporter Ferit Aslan conducted and exclusive interview with Demirtaş. 

COVID numbers have been steadily rising since June after the end of the lockdowns. As of August 13th, the Ministry reported close to 170,000 new cases and 884 deaths. The ministry is currently reporting hospital bed occupancy at 55% and that 29% of the ventilators are in use. Though medical professionals are reporting that the pandemic has wound down considerably thanks to the vaccines, but people are still being admitted to the ICU’s.
