This week on Pop & Politics we are joined by actress and producer Defne Kayalar and director, screenwriter, and producer Melisa Önel. In conversation with Kenan Behzat Sharpe, they discuss their new film Suddenly (or Aniden). The film had its world premier in Tokyo and then was shown at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. It focuses on Reyhan, a 40-year-old woman who suddenly loses sense of smell and one day decides to transform her life into something new. Visiting her hometown of Istanbul from Hamburg where she lives, she vanishes one day without telling her family where or why she has gone. In the process of exploring the city and creating a new life, she rediscovers her place in the world. According to Istanbul Bilgi University Professor Aslı Tunç’s recent article in Medyascope, Suddenly is a “multi-layered story” in which one notices “the complexity of the script, the richness of art direction, the beauty of subtle visual nuances hidden in the frame, and minimalist acting.” Defne Kayalar is perhaps best known abroad for her role as the therapist Peri in the Netflix series Ethos. She also starred in Saklı, the Turkish adaptation of the celebrated series The Affair, and many other series both on television and streaming platforms including Medcezir and As The Crow Flies. She has also played celebrated roles in many films including I Am You and Yol Ayrımı. She is also a thespian, having performed in plays by Berkun Oya and others. Melisa Önel’s film Me and Nuri Baba won Best Documentary at the 46th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. She is also the director of the 2014 feature-film Seaburners and contributed to the 2016 collection of short films Coastliners. She wrote the screenplay for both Seaburners and Suddenly with Feride Çiçekoğlu.
