Bedirhan Şener, son of former member of parliament Abdüllatif Şener, killed his grandmother Leyla Çetiner at the family’s home in Ankara. Bedirhan Şener had taken his grandmother hostage after an argument broke out, and had reportedly been dealing with psychological issues prior to the murder.
Bedirhan Şener’s father Abdüllatif had previously served as a parliamentarian for the main opposition Republican People’s party (CHP) before resigning in May 2023.
Father disputes details of killing
In an interview with Sözcü newspaper, Abdüllatif Şener disputed some of the details of the grandmother’s murder, saying his son had been dealing with psychological problems and was unaware he had killed his own grandmother:
“My son, who has psychological problems, shot the person in front of him without even knowing it was his own grandmother. We are so sorry. This has been a tragic incident.”
