US Special Representative for Syria Engagement James Jeffrey has stated that the disagreements between the US and Turkey over the scope of a safe zone in Syria are blocking its implementation. And Turkey now mulls whether to launch a military offensive against the YPG. With Washington backing the YPG and warning against any unilateral action, the two NATO allies could be on a collision course. In its latest analytical report on the issue, the International Crisis Group (ICG) addresses the dangers of violent escalation and concludes with recommendations for averting it. We speak with the author of the report Dareen Khalifa, a Senior Analyst at the International Crisis Group. For a viable solution in the region, Khalifa argues that the US should reorient its diplomacy and leverage its diminishing military presence toward reaching a political agreement between Turkey and YPG.
