This week a six-member U.S. team has arrived in the country to set up a coordination centre for a so-called “safe zone” in Syria. Galip Dalay, a visiting scholar at the University of Oxford and a fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, comments on the disagreements between the two NATO allies and on the prospect of a workable solution. Mr. Dalay argues that for Turkey, the depth of the zone matters as to whether it keeps the YPG controlled area fragmented or not.
