Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) publishes an annual anthology of the best journalistic work from each country every year. Medyascope’s ‘’BTK Files’’ is listed as one of the 8 best investigative stories from Turkey in 2022 according to GIJN.
The documents unearthed by Medyascope proved the accusations of mass surveillance. They reveal that the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), a government body that screens the internet content, user and traffic data in Turkey, allegedly relays instructions and tips to service providers on monitoring and sharing user data.
In a directive sent to service providers titled ‘’ ISS Traffic Log Patterns’’ the BTK demanded the hourly traffic log of users with their names.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has yet to issue a statemenet on the content of the files reported by Medyascope on July 21.
Investigated and reported by Medyascope reporter Doğu Eroğlu, the reporting was selected as one of the best 8 investigative journalistic works of 2022 by the GIJN.
