Body of missing 8-year-old found; 24 in custody

The body of Narin Güran, an 8-year-old from Turkey’s Diyarbakir province who had been missing since August 21, was found over the weekend in a small river near her family’s home. 24 people have been taken into custody in connection with the murder.

Narin Güran’s body was found in the small Eğertutmaz River around two kilometers from her family’s house hidden in a bag underneath branches and rocks.

Weeks of search efforts had failed to uncover a trace of the missing child.

In a statement released over the weekend, Turkish Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç announced that an autopsy had been performed on the body.

Following the autopsy, a report detailing the cause of death will be released.

Tunç’s statement read:

“We continue to collect statements from all individuals detained at this stage of the investigation. The number of people detained in the investigation has now increased to 24. We continue to pursue all details that will lead us to the truth of what happened. Those who caused  the death of this child will not escape and will be held accountable before the court of justice.”

Among those 24 individuals detained include Narin Güran’s mother, father, two siblings, uncle, and others close to the family.
