20 year incumbent President Erdoğan’s challenger Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu spoke on state owned TRT where he lambasted President Erdoğan after he seemingly, accidentally, admitted that an infamous video making the rounds on social media and Erdoğan rallies was doctored. Kılıçdaroğlu’s party CHP announced that they will press charges.
Mr. Kılıçdaroğlu and Mr. Erdoğan will face off this Sunday for the presidency. Though President Erdoğan emerged victorious from the first round, his win was insufficient to re-secure his seat for another 5 year term. With the final round of the most consequential election of modern Turkish history mere days away, Kılıçdaroğlu spoke on state owned broadcaster TRT, where he allotted the lion’s share of his time to addressing a doctored video President Erdoğan used to smear the opposition.
Though the doctored nature of the video is immediately obvious to even the moderately savvy observer, that has not stopped President Erdoğan from pretending that it was real and presenting it in rallies as such. The video features one of the opposition’s campaign videos doctored to look like the current head of PKK (a Kurdish militant separatist group and a terrorist organization) Murat Karayılan pledges full-throated support for the opposition. President Erdoğan has presented the video as legitimate to the public to bolster his allegations that the opposition is in bed with terrorists; a tactic he has used to good effect.
Last night however, President Erdoğan appeared to suffer a momentary lapse in judgment and admit that the video was doctored; evidence the opposition could use in their pursuit of legal action.
Voters petition CHP to press charges
Main opposition party CHP announced earlier today (May 23rd) that they would press charges. CHP Vice Chair Muharrem Erkek stated that he would share the charging document with the public later in the day. Additionally Erkek stated that they would not drop the issue and continue to press it in the following days. According to officials from CHP, the decision to press charges comes after many voters petitioned the party to take action.
Kılıçdaroğlu: “We will not let them manipulate anyone in the runoff”
After the broadcast, Kılıçdaroğlu tweeted “We will not let them manipulate anyone in the runoff. The mask is off, everything is clear as day.” Kılıçdaroğlu also added “The election has reset, onward to the ballots” calling for people to vote for him.
Kılıçdaroğlu finished off by tweeting the moment President Erdoğan experienced a slip of the tongue and captioned it “Fraudulent fabricator”
