Turkey: Former chief partner of main opposition party rejects collaboration effort

The main opposition party, CHP, and its chief coalition partner in this year’s general election, İYİ Party, voted on an offer to collaborate in the upcoming local elections during their General Administrative Board meeting. Once a crucial part of CHP’s coalition against the Erdoğan government, İYİ Party rejected the electoral coalition offer through a majority vote.

On Friday, November 30, CHP’s newly elected Chairman, Özgür Özel, extended an offer to İYİ Party’s Chair, Meral Akşener, suggesting collaboration in the local elections to enhance the opposition’s chances. This proposal followed a significant setback in last May’s general election, where the opposition failed to overcome the 20-year-incumbent President Erdoğan and his party AKP.

Subsequently, İYİ Parti voted on whether to nominate its own candidates in all 81 provinces or run joint candidates with CHP. In today’s board meeting (Monday, December 4), the proposal was rejected by a majority vote, indicating a division within the opposition.

After the board meeting, İYİ Parti Spokesperson Kürşad Zorlu held a press conference, announcing that İYİ Party would run independently in the 2024 Local Elections:

“There should be no doubt; we will continue to stand against the authoritarian ideology dragging our country into darkness, while adhering to our national values and responding to our nation’s call for a third way. İYİ Party will run independently in the 2024 Local Elections, as our Chairwoman has emphasized. We are dedicated to presenting our voters with the most qualified candidates and serving our community diligently under the banner of ‘Effective Municipal Governance.’

Kürşad Zorlu did not disclose the voting results.
