Fifteen people detained in Turkey for forcibly placing hoods over the heads of U.S. soldiers

In a dramatic incident in Turkey’s Izmir province, members of the Turkish Youth Union (TGB) forcibly placed hoods over the heads of U.S. military personnel, reigniting tensions in Turkish-American relations.

The TGB, known for its strong opposition to the American military presence in Turkey, shared a video of the event on social media. The footage shows a group of TGB members grabbing a U.S. service member assigned to the USS Wasp and placing a hood over his head, with a second sailor charging the group, only to meet the same fate. The video was accompanied by a statement condemning U.S. actions in the region, asserting that American soldiers “cannot soil our land” and promising similar confrontations for future visits.

The act of placing hoods over the heads of U.S. service members by Turkish nationalists is a direct reference to what is known as “the hood event” in Turkey, a significant and contentious episode in Turkish-American relations. This event took place on July 4, 2003, during the early stages of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. A group of Turkish soldiers operating in Iraqi Kurdistan were captured by U.S. forces, who placed hoods over their heads before taking them for interrogation. In Turkey, the incident was perceived as a profound insult, sparking outrage among nationalist factions. This symbolic act has since fueled ongoing tensions and is often invoked as a point of nationalist pride and grievance.

The İzmir Governor’s Office confirmed that 15 people were detained following the incident, which took place in the central Konak district on Monday afternoon. The group, consisting of 13 men and 2 women, targeted two American soldiers in civilian clothing. Local law enforcement swiftly intervened, preventing further escalation, while five additional U.S. military personnel, also in civilian attire, observed the event from a distance. Turkish authorities have launched an investigation.

In response, the U.S. Embassy in Turkey issued a statement assuring that the U.S. personnel involved in the incident are safe and expressed gratitude to Turkish authorities for their quick action. A White House spokesperson told Reuters that while they were disturbed by the incident, they appreciated the seriousness with which Turkish police handled the matter.

The USS Wasp, a major U.S. amphibious assault ship, had recently docked at Izmir Port following joint military exercises in the Eastern Mediterranean with Turkey’s TCG Anadolu. These exercises, held from August 13 to 17, had not been publicly disclosed by the Turkish Ministry of Defense. However, reports from the U.S. Naval Institute mentioned that other vessels, including the USS Oak Hill and the TCG Gökova, also participated in the drills.

Journalist Murat Yetkin emphasized that the exercises were conducted to deter aggression and maintain stability in the region, highlighting the strategic importance of such military collaborations amid rising tensions.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges in U.S.-Turkey relations, as nationalist sentiments within Turkey remain strong, particularly in reaction to perceived American military influence in the region.
