The Turkish mafia has recently made headlines in Greece after two members were detained in two separate incidents over the course of just three days.
The report alleges that Turkish criminal organizations use the neighboring country as an area to ‘settle scores’ with rival groups.
In addition to Greece being a venue for clashes between rival Turkish groups, the report also identified the potential of Turkish intelligence services to conduct covert operations using the groups as a tool.
In an armed attack that took place near Athens on September 13, 2023, six people were killed.
Several of the victims were alleged to have been connected to Barış Boyun, a Turkish mafia boss based in Istanbul known for ordering street executions using motorcycle hit squads. In an investigation following the incident, several of the associates killed were revealed to have been carrying fake passports and were on their way from Greece to Italy with the help of a former Turkish intelligence officer.
Alleged connections to terrorist organizations
The report analyzes incidents involving Turkish mafia figures in Greece since September 2023 and identifies common features. According to Greek media, individuals caught in Greece have claimed to be members of the Kurdish separatist group PKK or FETÖ supporters to apply for asylum when entering the country illegally, while also asserting that they face legal trouble in Turkey. The AKP government holds FETÖ responsible for the failed coup attempt in 2016, led by Fethullah Gülen, a Muslim cleric living in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania.
