The prize was awarded to the three economists for their studies on how institutions are formed. Their work also examines how these institutions affect prosperity.

Acemoğlu had previously partnered with Robinson to write their 2012 book, Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty.

Acemoğlu, born in İstanbul in 1967, graduated from the prestigious Galatasaray High School in 1986. Since 1993, Acemoğlu has been a faculty member at MIT. There, he has become one of the five most quoted economists in the world. His research focuses on political economy, economic development, and technological change. It also covers economic inequality and labor economics.

The Nobel Prize in Economics was first awarded in 1968. It is delivered to laureates every year on December 10th. This date marks the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.

Acemoğlu is now the second Turkish citizen to win a Nobel Prize. Novelist Orhan Pamuk won the 2006 Nobel Prize in Literature. This followed the publication of books such as My Name is Red and Snow.

Acemoğlu is also a regular guest on Medyascope programs. He provides analysis on economic issues. In a June 2023 segment with Editor-in-Chief Ruşen Çakır, he commented on the Turkish Central Bank’s decision. This decision was to hike interest rates to slow inflation.
