Marin Alsop made history when she became the first woman to lead a major American orchestra following her appointment to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 2007. Six years later, her appearance as the conductor at the BBC Last Night of the Proms distinguished her as the first female to take charge of the celebrated event in the festival’s 118-year history. And now, being named as the first female music director of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra she will mark a similar pioneering achievement.
In an exclusive interview with Isin Elicin from medyascope.tv, Maestra Alsop says “the fact that there can be still firsts for women clearly indicates that we should be vigilant about progress.”
